Pilates Imagery

Your imagination is a powerful tool! People have used imagining for millennia to shift the way they experience their bodies (think chakras, chi, embodying the hero’s of their culture’s lore). And you can use your imagination too during athletics!

Experiment with how the following ideas shift your experience and maybe even your posture during your next class. Take note of the shift. Because you might want to return to these images down the road if it serves you well.

Tall and Tension Free

When to use: standing, walking, sitting, getting up

– from Eric Franklin, Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery (2012)

Your head is a balloon, and your body is the string hanging down from it.

Your body is an upward surge of energy, like a waterspout, that your head floats on top of.

Combine

Your arms and legs dangle like balloon strings, and your core and spine is an upward surge of energy, like a waterspout, that your head floats on top of.
