Welcome to the wonderful world of Pilates! Whether you're looking to strengthen your core, improve your flexibility, or simply find a new way to move, your first Pilates class is an exciting step. Here's everything you need to know to get prepared and make the most out of your first Pilates class experience.
Think of your outfit as your Pilates superhero suit – fitted, flexible, and ready for action!
Here are a few tips that will help your instructor provide better guidance, and keep you comfortable:
Quick Note: If supporting ethical manufacturing is import to you and your wallet, avoid Lululemon – at least as of 2024 – and opt for second hand.
I’ll provide the Reformer, Tower, Chair, and Barrels. I’ll also provide the herbal tea and towels! Just bring yourself.
Many folks also bring their own water bottles into the studio since hydration is your best friend and Pilates can be thirst-quenching work!
Once you enter the 2nd floor studio spaces in Mississauga and Paris, please leave your phone and keys in your entry tray. That way, you can stay focused and get a full 50 minute Pilates session in with peace of mind.
Try to arrive 5-10 minutes early to your first class.
Arriving early is like giving yourself a head start – it’s all about setting the tone for a focused and relaxed session.
Even for virtual Pilates classes, try logging in early and double checking that your device is set up. That way, you’re ready to drop in on your body and breath at class start time!
Your instructor is your Pilates tour guide – don’t hesitate to ask questions and share any concerns. When you express your goals, you’ll get the most out of your class!
You should share:
First fill out the Intake Form, then if anything changes, update your instructor. Communication will help you stay comfortable and get the most out of your Pilates class!
With Private or Semi-Private Duo Pilates Classes, programming is 100% tailored to your body. You’ll never jump into a class built for someone else.
Your class experience can vary widely based on your goals and injuries. Especially during Private and Duo Pilates Classes. But expect to be challenged!
During your first Pilates Class, you’ll get an introduction to Pilates exercises. Don’t expect to be doing handstands on the Reformer! This will be Pilates for beginners.
Even if you have previous fitness experience, you might be unfamiliar with Pilates essentials.
These include:
Comfort is key in Pilates!
It’s okay to take breaks and modify movements. In fact, modifications define contemporary Pilates!
Let your instructor know if you experience:
Pay attention to how you feel and don’t push yourself when you feel uncomfortable. Pilates is all about connecting to your body, and enjoying the feeling of movement.
Review the Studio Policies so you stay informed about:
Pilates is a journey, not a destination – enjoy each step and celebrate your progress!
Allow your body and mind to have time to get familiar with moving on the equipment.
Everyone comes in with strengths that they can build upon, whether mental or physical. Recognize where you excel and use it.
I can’t wait to welcome and support you to one of my Pilates studios in Mississauga or Pairs! Remember, the most important thing is to enjoy the process.
